About Grice Gun Shop

Grice Gun shop was founded in 1955 by Lynn “Scoot” and Janet Grice.

Scoot returned from his service in the Army and reopened his Uncle Tom’s gas station on Third Street in Clearfield, Pennsylvania. Year round he washed and greased cars for customers between pumping gas. Janet worked as a secretary at Dumont Airplane and Marine in Hyde, PA. She later began working full time at the station. The Service Station had a small income, offering a very meager living for the young couple.

In their hometown and surrounding areas, hunting was essential to provide food for their families and to put meat on the table. Because of this, firearms were a fundamental part of the lifestyle in their local area. 

Scoot began reloading ammunition for himself, a few friends, and customers. This hobby sparked a notion for him to open a gun business in the future.

During the late 1950’s, there were thousands of military surplus rifles in the hands of people who had returned from WWII. With a little know-how and $100 in equipment, Scoot and Janet started sporterizing these rifles at the service station in their spare time. Starting into the gun business was a risk, so they maintained the gas pumps and grease pits as they began their newest entrepreneurial venture.

After a few years business was looking up and sales flourished. In 1962, they began producing custom rifles in addition to sporterizing military rifles. Scoot did gunsmithing, metal work, bluing, and fitted stocks, while Janet specialized in the high gloss finishing and bookkeeping.

By 1985, growth demanded a bigger building and better location, so the Grice family built a larger building just one block away from where it all began. Since then, Grice Gun Shop has been located at 216 Reed Street, Clearfield, PA where it operates today. 

In 1970, Scoot and Janet’s son, Tom, began working at the business. At only 8 years old he began his lifelong career as an entreprenuer in the sporting goods industry. By 1988 Scoot decided to retire. Tom and his wife Brenda purchased the Gun Shop that year and continue to manage it today along with their two children. Three generations of the family worked at the shop for years until the fall of 2021, when Janet decided to retire at the age of 87.

Tom and Brenda have grown the business exponentially since owning it. They added an extensive amount of products by widening the scope of items offered to include accessories, clothing, and additional types of firearms. Many additions to the building took place over the years as well as increasing the amount of employees to keep up with the growth of the business. The Gun Shop was brought into the computerized age over those years and by 2018, a monumental goal was achieved with the launch of their website www.gricegunsshop.com. 

In addition to serving their customer’s shopping needs, the Grice’s have generously given back to the local community each year through donations to local charities, first responders and community events, as well as volunteering.

The hard work and wise planning put forth by Scoot, Janet, Tom, and Brenda have created a strong business that grew to be the largest gun store in Pennsylvania. They strive to offer a knowledgeable, dedicated staff ready to serve customers with a huge selection of major sporting goods brands and stock a full line of sporting goods inventory. They stock thousands of firearms including handguns, rifles, shotguns, ARs, muzzleloaders, air guns ,as well as optics, accessories, and clothing to fulfill any customer’s need.
